Duke, a Labrador Retriever with a skin condition, has won the Del Mar 22nd Annual Ugly Dog Contest. The event not only celebrates ugly dogs, but also raises money for local charities such as the San Diego Food Bank and Rady Children’s Hospital.

Prizes are given for the ugliest dog, sure, but they also have competitions in other categories like cutest dog, best trick, and dog/owner look-alikes.

Competition for the top spot this year was fierce. If you follow these competitions, you know that most times they are won by Chinese Cresteds. And, in fact, a Chinese Crested Chihuahua named Rascal was the reigning champion in Del Mar before Duke took his crown last year. This year, the judges showed Rascal and Duke in a tie, so the audience was asked to break the tie with applause, and Duke won.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
