20th Annual ACE Award Winner: Therapy Dog Gunther

Today’s post features the winner in the Therapy Dog category. “Gunther,” a Rottweiler owned by John Hunt of Blackwood, New Jersey. “Gunther,” officially known as Bang’s Aleutian Sky CD RE THDD CGCA CGCU, is a six-year-old Rottweiler, certified by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and owned by John Hunt. In 2016, John Hunt and Gunther deployed as a therapy dog team to Orlando, FL to provide comfort to the grieving victims and families of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. Breed Specific Discrimination

FB_IMG_1460509388221Most of the time when we talk about breed specific prejudices, we focus on Pit Bulls, but its important to remember we’ve been here before. Many breeds have been the subject of laws and even just plain hatred because they’ve been seen as too aggressive. Typically, what we end up seeing is that if you breed and train them right, they are no different than any other dog.

In my recent trips through our local dog pounds and shelter, I’ve seen an abundance of Pit Bulls waiting to be adopted. They are very hard to place because people don’t realize how sweet they can be. Please don’t discriminate!

Trade Pub Urges Police Not to Shoot Dogs / Should Police Have Shot the Rottweiler?

In the wake of the tragic shooting of a Rottweiler in California this past week, this article from Law Enforcement Today seems especially important. It was written last March, but is making the rounds again now after the Rottweiler incident.
By the way, the officers involved in the shooting are now getting death threats against both themselves and their families. While I understand the upset, that’s just taking it too far.
