Question Petco Self-Service Grooming

Has anyone used Petco's Self-Service Grooming? I take my collie to a groomer currently, but with this economy I may to start doing it myself soon and it would be nice to be able to use professional equipment (especially the tub). If anyone has used it please let me know how you liked it.

Hi Tina,
I haven't used it but I do my own grooming of my dogs. I use a leash and the door knob. I tie the least to the door knob so they can't run away. Then I give them a treat and tell them what Im doing. They really like the treats so the rest of it is a breeze. If you want to cut their hair use a shaver. Do not use scissors because it is too easy to cut the dog when it moves. You can get one with different safety combs for the length adjustments. Always bathe before brushing or shaving it helps when the fur is wet. It detangels much easier. Use a stiff but not harsh brush to brush with. The price doesnt matter some of the cheaper ones are just as useful as the more expensive ones. Name brand doesnt matter at all. After grooming always remember to give them another treat, and tell them they were good. (Even if they weren't) It helps them feel alot better so they will be better next time. And, to add an extra touch of your own. You can spray some doggie cologne on them to make them smell that much better!

we supply you with a tearless shampoo, a force blower in back, towels, and a giant tub with a hose handle.

it's $10, there is no tax and if you have a pals card it's buy 8 in a year and they'll send you a cupon for a free self bath that's good for 1year.

you leave your hairy mess in the tub and your towels on the floor. you can bring your own combs and brushes.

the groomers have to buy their own supplies so petco does not supply any clippers, sizzors, or brushes for self bath customers

I am hoping to get a general quote for grooming my dog. This is all new to me. Cassie is an 8 month old Yorkie. She is in need of having her nails clipped and her hair cut especially around her face. I have only had her a couple of months and don't know where to go or what is needed. If you could help me out, I'd really appreciate it> Danette

Danette,

First off, make up a list of groomers near your home to call or visit. I am in Ohio, you are in California. Prices and styles vary from place to place. For instance, here in Ohio, the average pricing for a Yorkie is about $40 with a $10 variance in either direction depending on the level of haircut required.

HOWEVER. My sister is a vet in San Diego, and one of the nearby groomers she talked to charges almost $100... so there's your regional difference.

So your best bet is going to be personally contacting nearby groomers.

If you are grooming a Collie, a set of clippers 'shavers' is not exactly going to get you a good cut. Also, shaving when the fur is *wet*? One, this is going to ruin your clipper blades and motor, and two, could electrocute your dog. Water also is not a detangler. You should ALWAYS detangle/demat your dog before getting it wet. Water actually makes it worse. Detangler sprays are good for coats that are already combed out. If you need something to help prior to bathing, use corn starch. It's messy, but it works better than anything wet.

I don't know what kind of dogs you have but if she shaves her collie, it will never look like a collie again.

I still need to learn a lot when it comes to taking care of my Great Dane. I am taking care of Danee for 8 months now. He has a lot of hair loss lately and I am planning to change his shampoo. Please help me on what is the best thing to do.
