Default Obama's dog choice, good or bad?

I'm glad Obama got his daughters a dog like he promised, but I'm a little disappointed he didn't get a pound puppy. What with the recession and all, our shelters are fuller than ever and it would have surely helped if Obama chose a dog from a shelter instead of a purebred.

I also worry that in a year or so the shelters are going to be filled with Portuguese Water Dogs! Just like they were deluged with Dalmatians after the Disney 101 Dalmatians movie. I hope everyone doesn't run out and get a PWD just because they're cute and Obama has one.

I think Obama could have made a more responsible choice. Perhaps he could have found a shelter PWD if his family was really set on that breed, or by getting two dogs (one PWD from a breeder and one pound dog). What do you all think?

I am not too concerned about registered PWD filling the shelters ,the breeders take care of their own . If one needs to come back, the breeders insist on it being returned for re homing . However I think there will be allot of scam artist selling mix breed furry dogs as Portys A person not familliar with the breed would be easly sold a bill of goods . People need to be educated not to buy from anyone not a member of the PWD club, check them out with the BBB and be aware your will never find a Porty for a cheap price

I was disappointed, too. I'm sure it is hard to find a PWD shelter dog, and when getting a first dog it's a good idea to go pure from a breeder to avoid surprises, but shelter dogs are great too!! I just also feel like had he gotten a shelter dog getting a shelter dog would have become popular, helping out the doggie population.

I think all dogs deserve a good home. Each family needs to decide for themselves what is the best dog for them and from what source. That includes the first family.
