Miracle Avalanche Dog (Video)

The Associated Press is reporting on a Welsh Corgi from Billings, Montana who was feared dead after an avalanche, but who made his way back to his family’s motel room 4 days later.

Dave Gaillard and his wife, from Bozeman, stayed at the motel the night before they went back-country skiing near Cooke City outside Yellowstone National Park.  The avalanche killed Dave, and everyone thought the dog, Ole, had been taken as well.

Eleven-year old Marguerite Gaillard was busy making a memorial collage of Ole’s pictures when word was received that the dog was still alive.

The hotel owner drove the dog back to Bozeman for a reunion with his family.

Our sympathy goes out to the Gaillard family on their loss.  And we’re glad Ole was able to bring about at least one bright spot.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Beer for Dogs?

Apparently beer brewed especially for dogs has been around for a while, but it was news to us until we saw this article.

The Branding Villa Pub in England is now offering a non-alcoholic beer for dogs, flavored with meat extract. The pub is also offering up dog-friendly food including Sunday roast with “cat-flavored” gravy (made with beef and fish sauce, not actual cat).

In the U.S. we have Bowser Beer, another non-alcoholic brew. This one is made with barley malt and either chicken or beef, and in the Netherlands they brew Kwispelbier.

There are some dogs out there that already have a taste for beer, so if your dog is one of them you now have some canine-friendly, non-alcoholic options that are probably more palatable (to the dog, not you) and more healthy since they do not contain alcohol.

Have you ever given your dog beer (or has your dog gotten into some on his own)? Have you sought out beer brewed specifically for dogs? Let us know in the comments!

Tuesday Top Ten: Tricks to Make Your Dog’s Vet Visit Less Stressful

Does your dog somehow know when you’re taking him or her to the vet?  It seems like my dogs dig their feet in and sit down before we even leave the house.  Here are some ideas to make that long trip to the vet a little less stressful for both of you.

One Last Ride for K-9 Officer Kora

Photo: Richard Messina / Hartford Courant

From the Hartford Courant via Life With Dogs: Kora, an 11-year old German Shepherd, retired in August after nine years of service with the West Hartford K-9 Unit. Everyone expected her to live out her retirement with her handler, Officer Eric Rocheleau. However, he noticed that she was beginning to seem sluggish, so he took her to the vet last Monday.

I hate to get political, but…

Have you seen this story about Mitt Romney yet?  I usually don’t bring up too much about politics here, but really, this is just plain stupid, no matter who you plan to vote for. Apparently, Romney tied his dog’s crate to the roof of the family car for a 12-hour road trip. The poor dog must have been scared to death!

I have one question for you, Governor: If the crate was totally air-tight, how did Seamus breathe?

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Saturday Survey: Award-Winning Dogs

We posted earlier this week about Harbor, the dog who was recently named as being the world-record holder for having the longest ears on a living dog.  It made me think about awards my dogs might be able to win.  I think their biggest talent is the Oscar-winning performance they give, trying to convince each of us that no one else in the house fed them yet.  Continue reading Saturday Survey: Award-Winning Dogs
