Skunked!

Jake (before he met the skunk)

If you’ve ever come near a fresh skunk killed on the highway, you know the stench. What happens when your dog meets up with a skunk? After they roll in it, I mean. The problem is that skunks spray out a very oily substance meant to scare away anyone who might consider approaching too closely.

Because the substance is so oily, it’s very hard to get off of your dog. What works? This recipe comes from my dogs’ veterinarian, Timothy Blocher in Canton, Ohio.

1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon dawn dish soap

The dish soap breaks down the oil, the peroxide bubbles it free, while the baking soda kills the smell.

Jake, who lives with my friend Wendy, was recently skunked, and she says this worked really well.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

  1. Our E. Setter has been skunked once but has also rolled in possum poo which is extremely unpleasant-think manure! She has done that more than once. Needless to say,I will keep this recipe handy!

  2. This recipe really does work…. I have had to use it a lot due to my three dogs playing with skunks!
