Canine Guard for a Navy SEAL Funeral

Don’t you just love this picture?  They aren’t lying when they call dogs Man’s Best Friend.  This showed up recently on Facebook – made me cry.  Here’s the original caption, but I don’t know who took the pic.

During Navy Seal Jon Tumilson’s funeral yesterday, his trusted canine friend Hawkeye guarded him one last time.

Tumilson was one of the SEALs killed in the helicopter crash August 6th in Afghanistan.

To all of you who are serving:  Thanks, stay safe, and come home soon!  We love each and every one of you.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Puppy Palooza Pic

Photo: Kathryn Buckles

Got this on my twitter feed today. Apparently it was Puppy Palooza night at Progressive Field / Indians game.  They are so cute I just had to share!

(Frank – this one’s for you.)

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

PS – Just got down far enough on my Twitter page to find the sponsoring organization for Puppy Palooza.  Can anyone explain to me why the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District is presenting Puppy Palooza???  Are puppies really a problem for the sewer district?  Is the sewer district responsible for puppies?  I’m sooooooo confused!

UPDATE:  Thanks for the response @NEORSD.  Apparently, they are running a campaign about how “Because Dogs Can’t Flush” you need to pick up your dog’s messes before they get into the groundwater.  Now, it all makes sense.  (Not something I really wanted to think about, but it does make sense!)

Owney the Postal Dog Forever Stamp

Photo: USPS Postal Store

Have you seen the new stamp put out by the USPS?  It is one of those “Forever” stamps that you can buy at today’s rates and continue to use regardless of how high postage rates go up.  (If interest rates continue so low, I may consider investing!)  Anyways, this stamp features Owney, the canine mascot of the Railway Mail Service.

Shelter Sunday: Pets for Patriots

Photo: Pets for Patriots

I know, I usually feature a dog from a small shelter shown on Petfinder, but I blogged earlier in the week about Rocky, a retired and disabled military dog who was going to be put down if no one took him.  (Someone did, thank goodness.)  But I think this organization is well worth the space I’m going to give it today.

There are three things that get me choked up:  babies, dogs, and veterans.  Pets for Patriots involves at least two of them.

Saturday Survey: Would You Adopt a Disabled Dog

I posted earlier this week about Rocky, a disabled and retired military war dog who needed to be adopted.  Camp Pendleton was apparently overrun with requests to adopt the distinguished 3-tour veteran of Iraq.

I’ve personally never taken in a differently-abled dog (my kids are enough of a handful!)  Would you adopt a dog with special needs?  Keep in mind these are the dogs most often euthanized when they wind up in shelters.

Urgent Plea for Home for Retired Military Dog / UPDATED!

Photo: Pets for Patriots

UPDATE:  Rocky was saved today!  Trying to get details.  Please read below for more info.  Pets for Patriots can still use your support!

This is such a sad story – makes me wish I didn’t already have a houseful.  Rocky served three tours in Iraq between 2004 and 2007.  His last handler was killed in action, so Rocky was brought back to the States and has been cared for by other members of the unit.  However, now that his back legs are failing, the military will have to put him down unless someone adopts him by August 24th.
