The Dogs are Swimming in Charleston

From the Charleston Daily Mail:  An event is being held on Labor Day to raise money for the Putnam Animal Relief Fund to build a new shelter in Putnam County.

Dogs are invited to  swim from 6 to 8 p.m. Labor Day at Valley Park Wave Pool. Donations will be accepted at the door toward building the new shelter.

On a related note (and I have to include this because it concerns my employer, American Electric Power):  There will be a softball game at 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at Valley Park in Hurricane. It will pit the Putnam Animal Relief Center Pounders against the AEP John Amos Plant Scrubbers. The teams pay to play, and donations will be accepted from spectators.

For more information on either event, call Karen Haynes at 304-757-7584.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Shelter Sunday: Homeward Bound Pet Rescue / Gilmer County, GA

Meet Molly! According to Homeward Bound’s web site:

Molly somehow ended up at Gilmer County Animal Control pregnant and on borrowed time. Her days were running out and she was about ready to pop! We saved Ms. Molly from animal control on 5/7/10 and on 5/9/10 she gave birth to 9 happy healthy babies at her foster home. Ms. Molly is now ready for adoption and she needs her own home where she can get some loving! Molly was a good mom. Molly is pretty much fully housebroken. She is protective and has the typical hound dog howl and bark. She gets along well with other dogs but will sometimes growl or bark at them but is not aggressive with them. We are guessing that Molly is a Red Tick Coonhound mix. She is about 56 pounds and has beautiful red ticking. Molly is an older girl probably 5 years old. She is spayed, current on vaccines, dewormed and heartworm negative. She has been started on heartworm and flea preventative. Her adoption fee is $175.00. If you are interested in adopting Molly please complete an online Adoption Form. This dog is microchipped with a Home Again microchip.

Homeward Bound’s goal is to reduce the number of stray cats and dogs in their community through education programs, referral lists for neighboring shelters and rescue groups, and by offering cost-effective spay/neuter programs for those in need of financial assistance. Since August 29, 2000, they have rescued and adopted out 3,501 animals!

If you’ll be in Georgia soon, why not call Homeward Bound  at (706) 698-HOME to set up a time to meet Molly and her friends.

If you’re somewhere else, check out local animals available for adoption at PetFinder’s Shelter Center.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Shelter Sunday: Just Us Beagles and Friends / Alexander, AR

This is Bo, a beagle currently living in a foster home for Just Us Beagles and Friends.  It’s no secret that I love beagles, so when I searched the state of Arkansas for a shelter to feature here, this was a natural fit.  And isn’t this a great picture?  Just like I’ve said several times – Beagles are simply noses with feet!

Shelter Sunday: Polar Pug Rescue / Anchorage, AK

Meet Sherman!

Sherman is currently a ward of Polar Pug Rescue in Anchorage, Alaska. According to the Polar Pugs web site:

Sherman is a 6 year old black ‘special needs’ pug.
A lifelong bout with chronic dry eye has left him with eyesight that is not the best. He sees just fine but has a harder time in the dark. Because of his dry eye he requires special ointment twice daily at an approximate cost of $40.00 per month.
This sweetie is getting around so much better since his knee surgery.
Sherman is still getting therapy for his knee. He now is on Rimadyl possibly for the rest of his life. This cost about $60.00 per month.

About Polar Pugs (love the name, BTW):

Polar Pug Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization made up entirely of volunteers within Alaska. We are here to help rescue pugs find their ‘forever homes’.  Pugs surrendered to Polar Pug Rescue are placed in foster homes with dedicated volunteers for evaluation, social needs and vet visits.

For each and every pug, the care we provide includes:

  • Getting them up-to-date on vaccinations.
  • Spaying/neutering them (if needed).
  • Microchipping.
  • Solving their social and health issues on a one-to-one basis.

We try to match the perfect home to every pug. No pug will be turned away. We will take any and all pugs regardless of age, health or temperament.

The next Pug Party happens Saturday, July 10th, 2010.

Join our Yahoo Group for more pug party details.

If you have any questions, contact Maryjo at [email protected]

Here are pictures from the May 8th, 2010 pug party.

I’m not real sure what a pug party is, but it sounds like fun!

If you’re going to be near Anchorage soon, why not write to Maryjo and make an appointment to see Sherman or any of the other wonderful rescue dogs they have.  If you’re not near Anchorage, check out rescues and shelters in your area on Petfinder’s Shelters Center.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Stamps for Shelter Pets

Did you know you can now help out shelter pets simply by mailing a letter?  Maybe it’s time to take a break from e-mail and paying the bills electronically so you can use some stamps now available from the US Postal Service.  According to their press release:

The U.S. Postal Service continued a 50-year tradition today with the dedication of its latest social awareness stamp — Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet. The 44-cent stamps, on sale nationwide, feature photographs of five cats and five dogs from animal shelters and rescue groups.

“As a pet owner myself, I find this campaign enormously gratifying. Because of these stamps and the Stamps to the Rescue campaign, more people will learn about the plight of shelter animals,” said Joseph Corbett, Postal Service Chief Financial Officer. “More people, we believe, will adopt shelter animals, fewer people will abandon their pets, more people will spay or neuter their animals, and fewer animals will suffer.”

HALO, the holistic pet company partly owned by Ellen DeGenerous, has pledged to buy food for 1 million shelter animals during the stamps’ roll-out campaign.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!
