Live PD Shows Dog Rescue from Icy Pond

It’s that time of year again. Please keep close track of your dog if you live near water which may not be completely frozen. Kudos to the first responders in Franklin County (Columbus), Ohio for rescuing this dog, and to #LivePD on A&E for showing it. The video was rebroadcast on 10TV, and the Hilliard MedVet Facebook page featured the dog. Continue reading Live PD Shows Dog Rescue from Icy Pond

Ohio Names Shelter Animals Official State Pet

Animal Shelter KennelI’m proud of my home state of Ohio. The Ohio House voted with a 78-0 vote on SB 86 which includes language sponsored by state Representative Laura Lanese:

“A shelter pet is hereby designated as the official pet of the state to raise public awareness of shelter animals.”

The measure still needs to pass the state Senate and be signed by the Governor, but it’s a start!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Ohio Puppy Mill Reforms

Picture from HSUS A Humane Nation blog
I’m proud that my home state of Ohio has put into effect a new law upgrading standards of care for dogs kept in puppy mills. Our history in this area has not been great, with many commercial breeders keeping their dogs in filthy, horrible conditions. Ohio was ranked second in the nation as having the worst puppy mill problem. Continue reading Ohio Puppy Mill Reforms

How Adoptable Animals Should Be Advertised

I know this is an ad for an adoptable cat, but it is so well written I wanted to share it. I spend a fair amount of time dreaming about getting another dog, and perusing rescue postings. Usually, they are written to fit a certain template and tell you just about nothing about the dog. This one, by contrast, really gets your attention.

I think better ads are more successful than boring ones, don’t you? I have to think the adoption rate would go up if rescues and shelters put a bit more thought into their adoption ads. Continue reading How Adoptable Animals Should Be Advertised

Chewy Comes Through for Katy P

Chewy for Katy PIf you’ve been a long-time blog follower, you may remember my singing the praises of Chewy.com. Not only are they always a little cheaper for items I buy all the time (like hundreds of dollars worth of food for my animals every month), they are also very caring. You may have seen the donations they give to the shelter organizations featured on Animal Planet, like Planned Pethood Plus (Dr. Jeff).

The flowers shown here were sent to the Humane Society of Richland County (Ohio), which is caring for a cat named Katy P. Continue reading Chewy Comes Through for Katy P

Memorial Marker for Jethro

Jethro memThose of you who’ve been following this blog for awhile will remember Jethro, a Canton police department K-9 officer who was killed in the line of duty. His memorial stone has now been placed at the cemetery where all local K-9 officers are laid to rest. Very handsome sculpture of a very handsome dog. (The PK9A logo is for Police K-9 Association, which is instrumental in training and supporting K-9 Officers and their handlers in Ohio.)

Incidentally, I ran into Officer Ryan Davis the other day with his new K-9 partner, Tuko. Unfortunately, Tuko isn’t nearly as social as Jethro was, so I was unable to play with him, but he’s doing a great job learning his new duties.

And, every dog on the force is now outfitted in a bullet-proof, stab-resistant vest, courtesy of the funds raised after Jethro’s death.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
