Ohio Dog Fighter Denied Early Release from Prison

Judge Robert Ruehlman presided today over the early release hearing of Terry Kendrick, who had been convicted of charges related to running a dog fighting ring that was connected to the ring run by Michael Vick.

Kendrick’s original sentence was for 13 years, and he has served 8 years so far at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution. “I’ve learned a lot being away from my family as long as showing what my actions can bring about. You’ll never have a problem with me again,” Kendrick said.

However, prosecutors pointed out how badly the dogs had been hurt. Some were stitched up and made to fight again. Others were dumped and left for dead.

Kendricks’ wife, who stated he was “not a bad person”, and their 12 children were nearly jailed for contempt after they stated (loudly) their disagreement with the judge’s ruling.

Fortunately, the judge was not swayed and ruled that Kendrick should complete the original sentence in its entirety.

Bring ’em Inside!

The Ohio legislature is now considering a bill that would make it illegal to leave a dog tethered outside in extreme temperatures. The Capital Area Humane Society says it received 30 – 40 calls every day about animals left outside when it’s too cold for most of us to even take the garbage out. See the whole story on NBC4i.

Meanwhile in nearby Illinois, a new law took effect on January 1st that states No owner of a dog or cat that is a companion animal may expose the dog or cat in a manner that places the dog or cat in a life-threatening situation for a prolonged period of time in extreme heat or cold conditions that results in injury to or death of the animal.. Violators can receive a fine of up to $2,500 or 1 year in jail for this class A misdemeanor.

What’s the law in your state?

Canton K-9 Jethro

Jethro

I ran into Jethro and his handler while I was at the car wash yesterday. Jethro is an officer with the Canton (Ohio) Police Department, trained for patrol and for narcotics detection.

He’s very focused, but not really on the camera. His handler was standing behind me with his Kong toy.

Thanks to both of them for their service to the city I call home.

Humane Society Rescues Over 160 Neglected Animals in Southern Ohio

WARNING! Graphic content! (Footage courtesy Humane Society of the United States)

First of all, let me apologize. I rarely run videos that need a warning, and I’ve done it twice this week, of all weeks. I’m sorry. However, this is an important story and maybe counteracts a little of the horror brought by yesterday’s news from Arkansas.

The Humane Society of the United States announced earlier this month that they had participated in a raid in Adams County, Ohio that resulted in the rescue of more than 160 animals suffering from severe neglect.

The animal hoarder who was keeping these dogs also had many carcasses on the property. The video shows how relieved the dogs were to be leaving, but the scenes are heartbreaking.

Kudos to all who participated in this rescue.

Canton, Ohio considering adding laws against animal cruelty

shutterstock_93789841OK, so this is something I didn’t know until I read today’s paper. In the city of Canton (very close to where I live), there are laws about barking, trapping animals, animals running at large, and the number of pets a family may have at one time, but there is no law that makes it illegal to treat your dog badly. Weird, right?
