RIP K-9 Kye

RIP KyeFrom the Oklahoma City PD’s Facebook page – so sad!
A Final Goodbye – Sgt. Ryan Stark says goodbye to his K-9 partner, Kye, at Kye’s funeral yesterday at First Southern Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Kye was killed in the line of duty earlier this week. #RIPKye

The memorial video they have posted on Facebook is worth watching.

Rest easy, good boy. Thank you for your service.

On a related note, I’m sending sympathy hugs to my sister, Marilyn, who had to put her beloved Japanese Chin, Molly, down yesterday due to heart failure.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Happy Birthday to a K-9 Legend

JokerFrom the Brimfield PD Facebook page (if you haven’t “liked” it yet, you should!): About eight years ago, our department was very fortunate to welcome K-9 Joker into our ranks. Today is K-9 Joker’s birthday! He is now retired and at home, likely barking at squirrels and joggers.

K-9 Joker served the Brimfield Police Department for seven years, assigned to (now) Captain Adkins. Joker had an awesome nose and excelled at finding drugs, tracking and evidence recovery. He once tracked a drunken driver over pavement, through woods and swamp and directly to the back door of the fella’s house. He is a hoot to be around and had one heck of a work ethic. He was responsible for removing countless drugs from the streets.

He is now enjoying retirement and still lives with his police partner, Captain Adkins. Captain Adkins is not retired, much to his regret when subjected to my daily shenanigans.

Happy Birthday to K-9 Joker. We miss working with you. I truly miss the slobber all over my desk, phone, computer, pants, boots and chairs…..

Although my stash of stuffed animals is much safer now…..Chief Oliver.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Shaka: Once a Shelter Dog, Now a Police Dog

Officer Billy Wells is handler for Shaka, the Milwaukee Police Department's new drug detection dog.(RAYMOND RENDLEMAN / CLACKAMAS REVIEW)

Shaka, an American Staffordshire Terrier, was abandoned by her owner to New York’s death row several years ago, but she was rescued before they had a chance to euthanize her. She found new purpose as a police dog and is now a key weapon in the Milwaukee PD’s war on drugs, where she was successful in 18 of her first 20 searches.

Read the whole story in the Clackamas Review.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Wednesday’s Wild, Wacky World of Dog News

Dateline: Akron, Ohio.  What do you do when a burglar breaks into your house?  Of course, you run into a bedroom, call the police, and hide.

Luckily, when this happened to an Akron resident recently, she thought to take her dog with her into the bedroom.  As the thief was gathering together the stuff he wanted to take, he wandered into the bedroom where they were hiding…and the dog CHARGED him!  The dog chased the burglar out of the home, into the arms of police who had just arrived on the scene.

Good dog!  What kind of reward can you give a dog for that kind of help?

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Maybe the dog just likes candy?

This is a video of Stryker during training.

Something about this story just tickled my funny bone.  A woman from Los Angeles was driving through Solon, Ohio (near Cleveland).  She was pulled over for speeding and the human cops found her to be impaired, so they called in a dog to search the car.

Sure enough, Stryker found a bag of Jolly Ranchers that was labeled as containing marijuana for medical use only.  (Remember she lives in California, where that’s legal.)  But, since she also blew a 0.067 on her breathalyzer test, I guess she may have been more than a little impaired, and she was arrested.

Thanks, Stryker, for keeping our streets safe from candy!

BTW, the Solon police department is currently soliciting donations to care for the K-9 officers on their force.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

K-9 Officer Buford

This is my week to work our community festival sourrounding the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement.  As with any large gathering, this one involves a police presence to keep the crowd in line.  So, tonight I got to meet Buford, one of the most beautiful German Shepherds I’ve ever seen.  He works with Patrolman Gilmore of the Canton Police Department.  He let Buford out for a romp and a potty break in the area where I was working, so I asked to take a picture to share with you.  Thanks, Patrolman Gilmore and Buford!

Meet Buford, K-9 Extraordinaire

burfordMy posts have been a little few and far between this week because I’m working at the community festival surrounding the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement.

Today, I was honored to meet Buford, one of Canton’s finest.  (And I apologize, Buford, for the smeary picture – not sure what happened.  Let’s just say we are digitizing your face so you don’t blow your undercover status!)

Hard at work protecting and serving the populace of Canton, 7-year old Buford rides with Patrol Officer Gilmore of the Canton Police Department.

I think Buford was a little disappointed when he got out of the car ready to work, and only got his picture taken instead of using his training and skills.

Canton’s K-9 force consists of 11 dog/officer pairs.  They are used for search and rescue, bad-guy tracking, and drug sniffing.

Average annual cost of food:  $300

Average cost of dog acquisition and training:  $15,000

Sleeping better at night knowing Buford is on the job:  priceless!

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!
