From US News: Patches, an 8-month old German Shepherd thought the pond in his back yard looked pretty inviting. He didn’t stop to consider that it’s February…in Michigan.

When he fell through the thin ice, the matriarch of the house followed, and she soon fell through, as well.

Fortunately, Patches’ dad, former Marine Matt Duckham was home. Although he, too, fell through the ice, he had learned a technique in the Marine Corps that allowed him to break through the thin ice with his arms until he reached thicker ice near shore that would support him as he climbed out of the freezing water.

Not sure his mom appreciated the fact that Duckham pulled the dog out of the water before rescuing her, but all is well that ends well.

Rescue authorities at the scene reminded people that no ice is safe ice.

Until next time
Good day, and good dog!
