I can barely stand to write this story, but I’m going to in hopes that someone has information that will result in the prosecution of these…I would call them animals, but that’s an insult to animals. When burglars broke into a home in Hamtramck, Michigan, the family dog apparently began barking, which of course they didn’t like.

Instead of simply leaving the home and looking for a better target, they doused 14-year old Abbey with Drano and beat her with a broomstick. No dog deserves this, but a 14-year old? Seriously? This breaks my heart.

Abbey’s mom, Sarah Birkel, spoke to WXYZ. “It looked like they tried to kill her. If the Drano wasn’t back there, would they have taken a knife and slit her throat and stabbed her? Would they have done that? They probably would have done that – all because she just barked.”

Abbey was rushed to the emergency vet where she was bathed and her eyes and ears were flushed to remove the chemicals. She is now receiving 24-hour-a-day care at home.

Detroit Dog Rescue is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the person who assaulted the dog. Anyone with any information on a possible suspect is urged to call Hamtramck Police at 313-876-7800.

For more information: there is a video on WXYZ, but they’re not allowing it to be shared.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
