Pet Leasing Industry Sued

On Monday, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Humane Society of the United States sent a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) urging it to investigate the harmful pet leasing industry for deceiving consumers. The complaint asks the FTC to investigate Wags Lending and associated pet stores for deceptive practices that lead consumers into signing leases for pets they believe they are purchasing. The complaint also asks the FTC to investigate the practices of Monterey Financial Services, which collects lease payments from Wags Lending’s customers. Continue reading Pet Leasing Industry Sued

Animal Legal Defense Fund Sues Petland

Office Worker Boss DogThe Animal Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s preeminent legal advocacy organization for animals, announced the filing of a nationwide consumer class action lawsuit against Petland, a national pet store chain, and the chain’s Kennesaw, Georgia location. The Animal Legal Defense Fund filed in United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia alleging Petland violated the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) Act and Georgia RICO Act. On Thursday, Sept. 22, from 6:30–9:30 p.m. the Animal Legal Defense Fund will host the premiere of Of Dogs and Men, a film focused on the tragic epidemic of police officers shooting pet dogs in the line of duty. According to the U.S. Department of Justice statistics, more 10,000 pet dogs are shot and killed by police officers every year. Every 98 minutes a pet dog is shot and killed. Yet, no officer has ever been killed in the line of duty by a dog.
