Wirehaired Vizsla and Coton de Tulear Join the Ranks of the AKC
The pack has expanded! The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) announced the Coton de Tulear and Wirehaired Vizsla will be welcomed to its litter of recognized breeds this year, growing AKC’s family to 180.
“The AKC is excited to recognize these friendly, outgoing breeds, giving dog lovers everywhere even more choices to fit their lifestyle,” said AKC Spokesperson Gina DiNardo. “While they differ in exercise and grooming needs, both are sweet, loyal, loving family companions.”
Coton de Tulear
Known as the “Royal dog of Madagascar”, the Coton de Tulear joins the Non-Sporting group. The breed originated on the island of Madagascar and was owned only by nobleman. Cotons are small, sweet dogs with a lot of heart. They thrive on human companionship and make loyal family pets. They get along well with children, as well as other dogs. Their long, cotton-like coat requires regular brushing. Additional information on the breed can be found on the United States of America Coton de Tulear Club’s website.

Tuesday Top Ten: Most Registered Dog Breeds in the US, 2013 Edition
The American Kennel Club has announced their list of breed registrations from 2013. Although many owners don’t choose to register their dogs, the number of registrations received for each breed is considered an indication of the popularity of the breed. Of course, there are undoubtedly many more mutt-i-grees than purebred dogs in the world, but this list includes only those dogs who carry an actual pedigree.

Woofipedia from the American Kennel Club
Have you checked out the games and quizzes available on the American Kennel Club’s Woofipedia site? I especially like the one where you try to guess which breed is depicted from a close-up shot of part of the dog’s body. I got an 85% first time through. (It took me a minute to figure out that the one that turns blue is the correct answer – not necessarily the one you have selected.)
I didn’t do quite as well on the Fact or Fiction quiz, but it was still fun to play!
They also have photo contests and a section devoted to dog videos.
If you register when you play, you can earn “Woof Points” which are redeemable for e-trophies. The AKC’s goal in offering this site? To celebrate dogs and to engage, entertain, and educate the people who love them.
Nicely done, AKC!
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
