I struggled with keeping my dogs out of the trash with two former dogs. (Penny can’t reach – she just gets into things I leave out.)
The only thing I found that worked was a trash can that fit into a top-opening cupboard that tipped out towards you.
This looks like it would be an easy solution, as well.

NBC and Telemundo stations around the country will team up with hundreds of shelters on Aug. 18 for the fourth annual Clear the Shelters animal adoption drive.
Since 2015, over 150,000 animals have been adopted at this annual event. Maybe you can find your new family member this weekend. Adoption fees are often waived or discounted at participating shelters. Find the closest participating shelter.

I know this is an ad for an adoptable cat, but it is so well written I wanted to share it. I spend a fair amount of time dreaming about getting another dog, and perusing rescue postings. Usually, they are written to fit a certain template and tell you just about nothing about the dog. This one, by contrast, really gets your attention.
