Book Review: A Dog’s Purpose

I spent last weekend reading A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron.  What a delight!  Cameron is most often recognized as a humor writer, having penned three funny novels including one that was the basis for the TV show 8 Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter. In this book, he takes a more serious turn, although he allows his humor to shine through a few times.  (After his family buries a recently departed house pet, the dog digs her up for them, reasoning, “they can’t possibly have meant to bury a perfectly good dead cat.”)

Tuesday Top Ten: Ways Dogs Communicate

When I asked my son what I should write about today, he said he wanted me to write about how Penny (my beagle, that Jimmy thinks is his) scratches on his bedroom door to get in at night.  We started talking about how dogs talk to us, which of course Jimmy pointed out that they cannot do.  The more we talked the more I was convinced I could come up with at least ten ways our dogs communicate, so here goes.

Police Dog at Columbus Airport

It seems wherever I go, I make new dog friends.  This beauty was working at the Columbus airport when I went to meet my mother for our weekend trip to Boston.

For the life of me, I cannot remember this dog’s name, but I’ve never met a friendlier police dog.  I was almost afraid he was alerting to me because he walked right up to me and started sniffing me and wagging his tail.  The officer just laughed and said, “No, he’s just smelling your dogs on you.”

Thanks for keeping our airports safe, Mr. What’s Your Name!

(Officer – If you read this, please remind me of the name in the comments below.  Tks.)

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

UPDATE:  Thanks to Officer Daives for reminding me that the dog’s name is Segal!

Who let the cat in here?

I’m back.  Sorry for yesterday, folks.  I usually keep my computer away from the cats because they think the mouse pointer is fun to bat at.  Might be fun for them, but it’s really annoying when I’m trying to work.  Someone left the office door open, however, and I see Panther took advantage of the situation.   Anyway, my surgery went well (in case you were wondering).  I had a torn meniscus in both knees – took care of the left one yesterday and the right one next month.
