Urgent Adoption Request from Greencastle, IN

From HSPCAnimals.org:

It is with extreme sadness that we announce that the shelter will be closing on September 30, 2011.  We have been instructed that all animals are to be placed by the 30th or be euthanized.

Any animal at the shelter that is already spayed/neutered will be adopted out with a “choose your own adoption fee” special. Those not spayed/neutered will be adopted out with an adoption fee to cover the costs. ALL adopted animals will be s/n before going home. PLEASE help us place these animals!

Between now and the end of September, the shelter will be open Tuesday and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. for adoptions.

Financial donations are still desperately needed to cover costs through the end of the month, in addition to covering debts.

When I checked at PetFinder this morning, there were 5 dogs and 23 cats left in need of a home.  Please help if you can!  Contact info:  765.653.5739 or [email protected]

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Shelter Sunday: Canine Castaways / Arcadia, FL

Meet Petra!  Petra is currently living with Canine Castaways in Arcadia, FL.  I was fascinated by this dog because of her parentage.  Dachshund & Black Lab…really?  I’m just trying to imagine the physics of her conception.  But I digress.  Here’s what Canine Castaway’s website has to say about this beauty.

Shelter Sunday: Pets for Patriots

I know, I usually feature a dog from a small shelter shown on Petfinder, but I blogged earlier in the week about Rocky, a retired and disabled military dog who was going to be put down if no one took him.  (Someone did, thank goodness.)  But I think this organization is well worth the space I’m going to give it today.

There are three things that get me choked up:  babies, dogs, and veterans.  Pets for Patriots involves at least two of them.

Saturday Survey: Would You Adopt a Disabled Dog

I posted earlier this week about Rocky, a disabled and retired military war dog who needed to be adopted.  Camp Pendleton was apparently overrun with requests to adopt the distinguished 3-tour veteran of Iraq.

I’ve personally never taken in a differently-abled dog (my kids are enough of a handful!)  Would you adopt a dog with special needs?  Keep in mind these are the dogs most often euthanized when they wind up in shelters.

Urgent Plea for Home for Retired Military Dog / UPDATED!

UPDATE:  Rocky was saved today!  Trying to get details.  Please read below for more info.  Pets for Patriots can still use your support!

This is such a sad story – makes me wish I didn’t already have a houseful.  Rocky served three tours in Iraq between 2004 and 2007.  His last handler was killed in action, so Rocky was brought back to the States and has been cared for by other members of the unit.  However, now that his back legs are failing, the military will have to put him down unless someone adopts him by August 24th.
