What Are They Feeding You?

Petco logoNo, this post isn’t about smelly cats. (For the Friends fans reading along.)

As a new convert to homemade dog food, I was interested in this new venture by Petco.

As part of their effort to continue to offer pet parents the very best in pet solutions, Petco has partnered with Los Alamitos, CA based JustFoodForDogs to offer fresh, small-batch, human-grade food for dogs in strategic locations across the country. This move comes as a result of listening to the pet parent community and understanding that increasing numbers of pet parents are looking for alternative options when it comes to feeding their furry family members. Have you tried Amazon’s new dog food?

Wag

Available exclusively to Prime members, Amazon is now selling private label Wag dry dog food via its pet supply site wag.com.

There are four different flavors, all marked “no added grain”. The 30-pound bag costs about $45, and you can get a $5 off coupon on the site.

There is also one flavor (chicken and lentil) for puppies.

If you’ve tried it, let the rest of us know what you think. Did your dog like it? Did you see any benefits to this food vs. whatever you were feeding before? Inquiring minds want to know!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Tuesday Top Ten: Best Dry Dog Foods

Man’s best friend has become a member of the family—and the pet industry knows it. Pet product marketing is shifting to appeal to our responsibility as “pet parents” and making sure we give our pets the very best, with slogan’s like Honest Kitchen’s “Honest Difference” with “human-grade” ingredients. But how much do we really know about what we’re feeding our beloved dogs?

Clean Label Project™ had over 900 of the most popular pet food products tested for 130 industrial and environmental toxins including arsenic, once known as a primary ingredient in rat poison; cadmium, the active component in battery acid; as well as pesticides and additional contaminants linked to cancer and other fatal conditions in both humans and animals. The results were shocking.

Clean Label Project found lead in some pet food at 16 times the concentration of lead in Flint, Michigan’s tainted drinking water. And arsenic in concentrations of 555 times higher than the maximum contaminant level for human drinking water set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is the food our pets eat twice a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is cause for extreme concern.

If you’ve been a long time reader, you know I have toyed with making homemade dog food several times, but can never seem to find the time to stick with it for very long. I have the typical working parent guilt – I know it’s better for the dog if I make it myself, but I have a hard time juggling everything I “should” be doing. Earlier this week, I posted about how happy I am with Chewy.com, a budget conscious and convenient way to get high quality food for the dog even though it is commercially made. What about you?
