My dog has a lump on her leg……

I found this big lump on my dog, Lucy, just inside her back leg. Naturally I panicked thinking it was cancer, so I took her to a new emergency vet (it was a Sunday) and they took a biopsy, blood, urine etc. etc… racked up a bill of 600 dollars. I later got the good news it was just a fatty mass.

At her next regular check up, my vet says “Oh, I see Lucy has a fat deposit on her leg….”. I guess my point is, DON’T PANIC. Although they can be unsightly, they are normally harmless, and there are steps you can take to reduce the size.

Does any one else have experience with these lumps on your dog??

Dogs of War- Our Canine Soldiers

In the US it’s Veteran’s Day Weekend. In Canada, it’s Remembrance Day Weekend. Most of us have some tie that makes us reflect, if even for a moment.

We all know “working dogs” truly love a perfectly executed assignment if only to see a smile on their master. It’s rewarding for them.

We brought you a great video from Military.com about soldiers befriending dogs overseas. Now here’s a special look at the dogs who are working side by side, and actual members of our armed forces.

A U.S. Army soldier with the 10th Special Forces Group and his military working dog jump off the ramp of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter during a training exercise.

New York Times Best Selling Author Lisa Rogak has captured the excitement of working dogs in her new book The Dogs of War.   It’s an inside look into a very elite, working and special class of dogs.

Detroit to Euthanize Stray Pit Bull. Just because he’s a Pit Bull.

To be killed this Friday

A stray dog named Ace, after the store he was found near, is going to be killed.

Why?  “Ace is considered unadoptable because he is a pit bull.”

You can follow the story on the Facebook page (now with more than 12,000 likes) for the Detroit Dog Rescue and Save Ace campaign,  and read the full story from the Oakland Press by Karen Workman here.

Dogs Walked by Men Four Times Likelier to Show Aggression: Study Shows

A dog’s age, sex and size, as well as the owner’s sex and whether or not a leash is used all affect canine behavior.

An interesting new study out of Mendel University in the Czech Republic, which is set to appear in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science, examines various factors that can affect a dog’s level of aggression toward other dogs while being walked.

The study spearheaded by Petr Řezάč, an associate professor in the Department of Animal Morphology, Physiology and Genetics, found that a dog’s age and gender can affect his or her inclination to threaten another dog.  More surprisingly, by observing 1,870 dogs in 30 different public places in the city of Brno from May to September of 2009,  the study also found that the sex of the person walking the dog and whether the dog is on a leash has an affect on the dog’s likelihood to attack or threaten another dog.

So what do you think of this study?  We’d love to hear your opinion/experiences in the comments below!

Dog Given Up for Dead Emerges After House Fire

A dog thought dead after a major fire that destroyed the home emerged from the ashes 12 hours later.

The fire damage was so severe that the second story collapsed into the ground floor. The family escaped without harm but they thought their dog had perished in the blaze.  Their dog Daisy was found about 12 hours later as demolition on the ruined building began.  I’m so glad the family got out okay and that they were reunited with their dog!  Doggies.com loves happy endings 🙂

Read the full story here.  From the sounds of it, Daisy was scared and covered in ashes, but otherwise she got out pretty much unscathed.

Do I do right by my dogs?

Daisy and LucyI certainly am one of the most loving of all dog owners.  I have two dogs, both from the local Humane Society, your basic mutts.  I pay more attention to them then just about anything in my house.

I pet them, play with them, talk, sing to, treat, and look after them as best I can.  Yes, my dogs are happy dogs.  When I come home, even from a short trip to the store, it’s a huge delight for them.  Their tails wag like crazy and I get the warmest, happiest welcomes.

But here’s where I fail them.

I don’t walk them often enough.  Most of us have careers, long work hours, duties at home, etc., sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day.  I don’t think once or twice a week cuts it.  I have to be more diligent and more responsible to THEM.

Today it was enough of excuses, I got out the leads and off we went.  They sure were happy to go, and when we got back, both of them curled up for a snooze.  I’m promising myself and my dogs, to get out there with them more often!!!!!

Dog Secret Exposed: Why Santa Never Came to my House Last Year

For almost a year I thought I’d unknowingly done something terrible that left an empty floor under my tree last Christmas morning.

My neighbor just came clean and has captured the real truth in this 8 inch sculpture.  Embarrassingly, that… would be my dog.

My apologies to anyone else on my street that didn’t get any gifts last year 🙂

This $8 decoration from Collections Etc explains it all!  Sure to bring some holiday cheer to any dog lover!
