Tuesday Top Ten: Dog Breeds for Children

Looking for a dog who will be a great friend to your kids?  Obviously, you want a dog who is patient and tolerant of children who might be a little grabby, but you must also match your potential dog’s temperament to your family’s lifestyle.  Four out of every ten dogs who are taken into families are later dropped off at shelters simply because the dog’s personality doesn’t match the family’s expectations.

Shelter Sunday: HALO / Phoenix, AZ

Meet Amos, a black-and-tan hound living under the guardianship of Helping Animals Live On in Phoenix. According to the HALO website:

Ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog….and although I don’t cry ALL the time I will let you hear my deep and beautiful howl. My name is Amos and I am a 2 year old Black and Tan Hound. I sure act a lot younger the way I jump, run and flail my long legs around. Needless to say I will need some training and a LOT of exercise to learn my manners but I promise you won’t get bored with me! I keep all the staff and volunteers at HALO on their toes with my silly antics and deep howl. I get along well with other dogs that want to have a good time like I do! My favorite thing to do is wrestle but I also play with toys. If your current dogs aren’t too active I probably would be a bit overwhelming for them and it would not be a good match. I am great with people and although I would knock down younger kids I would love to have older children to play with. I do very well keeping my crate clean all night, so housetraining shouldn’t be a problem. Also keep in mind I am a hound and I have a great sense of smell and boy do I use my nose a lot! It is a necessity to have a very good fence around your yard for me, because once I get the whiff of summer bar-b-q’s I will be off like a rocket! My adoption fee covers my neuter, vaccinations, de-wormers, microchip and collar with tags. If you are looking for a goofy and loving boy and have the time and energy to work with me then I am definitely the boy for you!

If you’re near the Phoenix area, why not stop by HALO and check out Amos.  And if you’re not in Phoenix, check out shelters near you in PetFinder’s  Shelter Center.

Bow Wow Beach

Wow!  We took the dogs to Bow Wow Beach in Stow today – what a blast!!!  Kayla started off right away being aggressive to the other dogs, so we had to leave her in the car. (Yes, I left the A/C on.)  Penny didn’t think too much of the water, but Maggie loved it.

I met my first Leonberger – beautiful dog, but so hairy and incredibly big!  His name is Kasey.  The lab was named Kitty (too cute!).  My son thought throwing the ball for the lab was a great game, and apparently so did Kitty!

The main reason we went was to try to get Cooper used to swimming so he’d be a little more interested in dock diving.  I can’t say it was a total success, but he did get a little wet.  I took a picture of him in the water so my dock diving friends would believe he actually got in.  He only went as far as he could touch, but you could tell he was at least thinking about following the other dogs in a little deeper.

We stayed for a couple of hours, and now the dogs are absolutely exhausted!  I don’t think any of them even sat down for a minute the whole time we were there.  So many dogs to visit with, and so many people to sniff at.

And most of my pictures actually turned out this time!

Anyways, if you’re near northeastern Ohio, make sure to make time for a trip to Bow Wow Beach in Stow.  It’s a great place, and best of all, it’s free!

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Pit Bulls in the News Again: Vicious Dogs or Merely News Fodder?

It’s not wild, wacky Wednesday, but there were several news stories I wanted to comment on today.  I have a news feed that comes into my e-mail, just to keep me updated on what’s going on in the world.  For some reason, today there was nothing but bad news about Pit Bulls.
