Ohio County Shelter Euthanasia Rates

Wow! This article from the Columbus Dispatch is worth reading, even if you don’t live in Ohio. It compares euthanasia rates between shelters run by the dog wardens or sheriffs in each of Ohio’s counties. At the “good” end, only 1% of dogs are put down, while one county actually puts down over 80% of the dogs it takes in. That’s so disturbing!

Check out this video from NBC News about the Pilots-N-Paws organization. It’s worth watching (if for no other reason) to see the adorable puppies!

Pilots-N-Paws picks up dogs from shelters where they would be killed and flies them in small private planes to more urban areas where people are looking for animals to adopt.

What a great show of cooperation to keep these dogs from being euthanized!

Dog Prosthetics

Isn’t this dog gorgeous! I’m partial to blue dogs anyways, but he is especially pretty. But that’s not the point of the story. Wyatt was found missing a rear leg, and rescued by the Cleveland Animal Protective League. Once his story became known, a massive fund-raising drive raised enough money for him to be fitted with a prosthetic leg. It’s amazing the things that can be done when people put their minds to it, isn’t it?

Once he gets used to his leg, Wyatt will be available for adoption, probably sometime this fall. It will be a lucky family that gets him!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Detroit: City of Stray Dogs

Rolling Stone photo by Photograph by Wayne Lawrence / Wayne Lawrence/Institute
I just finished reading a rather disturbing story in Rolling Stone about the city of Detroit. This once proud city has fallen victim to the economy is a way perhaps no other city on earth has. Aside from the human toll, the bad economy has caused an epidemic of stray dogs numbering in the tens of thousands.
