The Journey Home: A Rescue Waggin Story

Check out this video from PetSmart Charities’ Rescue Waggin, in honor of October being Adopt a Shelter Dog month.

The film tells the uplifting story of two homeless dogs, Izzy, a shepherd-chow mix, and Kane, a hound, on what was literally the ride of their lives from the streets of Chattanooga, Tenn. to a shelter in Milwaukee, Wis. where the dogs found their forever homes.

No Pet Store Puppies Day

This Sunday, July 21st is “No Pet Store Puppies Day,” the third year of the ASPCA’s campaign to fight puppy mills. In honor of this day, they have just launched a new video called “Meet Molly” which features young Molly with her dog Joey explaining how puppy mills are bad and why to avoid pet stores that sell puppies.

Please watch and share!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

I try to feature a dog who needs a forever home every Sunday in our Shelter Sunday feature, but this is the first time I have asked shelters to consider taking in more animals. It seems a rescue organization in San Bernardino County, CA got in over its head, and now the county’s animal shelter in Devore has taken in 130 dogs. This is stretching the shelter awfully thin, and these dogs are not yet ready to be adopted in family homes. They are skittish and run from people.

Check out the full story in the Daily Bulletin.

If you run a shelter and can take some of these dogs, call San Bernardino County’s animal shelter in Devore at 909-386-9820.

Shelter Sunday: Blue Ridge Humane Society / Hendersonville, NC

Meet Penelope! I picked her over all the other dogs at the Blue Ridge Humane Society, because really, what better name is there for a dog than Penelope? This 5-year old Pointer / Beagle mix has been living in Hendersonville, NC at the Blue Ridge Humane Society since May. Here’s what their website has to say about her.

A Shelter Dog Gets Chosen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

I’m not sure who wrote this. I found it on Facebook, and just fell in love with the sweetness of it!

Until next time,
Good day. and good dog!
