From the Humane Society of the United States:

The Humane Society of the United States is reporting on problem puppy mills, including some dealers (re-sellers) and transporters. The Horrible Hundred report is a list of known, problematic puppy breeding and/or puppy brokering facilities.

It is not a list of all puppy mills, nor is it a list of the worst puppy mills in the country.

We provide this update annually, not as a comprehensive inventory, but as an effort to inform the public about common, recurring problems at puppy mills.

The information in this report demonstrates the scope of the puppy mill problem in America today, with specific examples of the types of violations that researchers have found at such facilities, for the purposes of warning consumers about the inhumane conditions that so many puppy buyers inadvertently support. Ohio Puppy Mill Reforms

I’m proud that my home state of Ohio has put into effect a new law upgrading standards of care for dogs kept in puppy mills. Our history in this area has not been great, with many commercial breeders keeping their dogs in filthy, horrible conditions. Ohio was ranked second in the nation as having the worst puppy mill problem. Continue reading Ohio Puppy Mill Reforms

The Power of Facebook

Sharing a story today from the small town of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, which points out the power of Facebook.

A random Good Samaritan named Kelly Gray posted on her Facebook page that three dogs were left outside in the extreme cold we’ve been experiencing here in Ohio: The dogs in the Kirby puppy mill are freezing with no water and no one takes action! Who can help!! She also uploaded a few pictures and a video of the cold Beagles. The post was shared over 6700 times, prompting action from the Wyandot County Sheriff and Humane Society. Should Pet Stores Be Required to Sell ONLY Rescue Animals?

Pet Group
From the LA Times: California recently passed a law (AB 485) prohibiting, on and after January 1, 2019, a pet store operator from selling a live dog, cat, or rabbit in a pet store unless the dog, cat, or rabbit was obtained from a public animal control agency or shelter, society for the prevention of cruelty to animals shelter, humane society shelter, or rescue group. Sign the Petition to Restore Puppy Mill Information to the USDA Website

Since at least 2010, if you wanted to make sure you were buying a dog from a reputable breeder, you could search for the breeder on the USDA’s website, which listed known animal abusers, including puppy mills.

Inexplicably, this information has been removed from the site. Their suggestion is that you instead file a request under the Freedom of Information Act, which could take years before you get a response.

Please join me in asking the Trump administration to restore this information to make it easy to access. Sign the petition.

Learn more about the issue on ScienceMag.org.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Puppy Mill Maps from Bailing Out Benji

USDA MapI just found this really cool site combating puppy mills through education, rather than through graphic photos. Bailing Out Benji shows you, state-by-state, where there are puppy mills and puppy brokers, and gives an estimate of how many adult dogs are being held. It also gives you the option of printing out flyers to post, asking people to adopt rather than buying dogs in pet stores, so as not to support these mills.

Their website gives you a little information about who Bailing Out Benji is: Continue reading Puppy Mill Maps from Bailing Out Benji

Saturday Survey: Dogs rescued from puppy mills

I posted an amazing video earlier in the week about the fabulous work the ASPCA is doing to rehabilitate adult dogs rescued from puppy mills. It’s clear that the dogs can be rehabilitated; however, it’s also clear it takes a ton of patience and hard work to help the dog recover. Would you have that much love in your heart to take on one of these dogs?

No Pet Store Puppies Day

This Sunday, July 21st is “No Pet Store Puppies Day,” the third year of the ASPCA’s campaign to fight puppy mills. In honor of this day, they have just launched a new video called “Meet Molly” which features young Molly with her dog Joey explaining how puppy mills are bad and why to avoid pet stores that sell puppies.

Please watch and share!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
