Leptospirosis Outbreak in Phoenix

12-News in Phoenix is reporting an outbreak of leptospirosis in more than 50 Maricopa County dogs.

The bacteria is passed from dog to dog (and even to humans!) when the eyes, skin, nose, or mouth come into contact with bodily fluids from an infected dog, excluding saliva and most often urine.

What to watch for: fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, red eyes, and stomach upset. The bacterial disease also can damage the kidneys and liver, so you may see either an increase or a decrease in urination, excessive thirst, and yellow eyes or skin.

A vaccine will prevent infection, but if your dog has not been vaccinated and comes down with lepto, antibiotics can be given to cure the infection. Untreated, the disease can result in death.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Leptospirosis Outbreak in Fresno

Officials in Fresno, California are warning dog families that they have seen at least recent nine cases of leptospirosis among dogs in the area. The most recent case appears to have been contracted at the Woodward Dog Park.

Symptoms of this bacterial infection range from general lethargy and refusal to eat to fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Not only do dogs spread the disease among themselves, they can also spread it to humans, where it causes flu-like symptoms.

A vaccine is available for your dog at the low cost of just $6 at the CCSPA.

Without seeing the dog personally, it was hard to know whether or not he was in significant pain, or had any quality of life. Several of my family felt it was time to put him down, several others thought maybe not. Continue reading Saturday Survey: Would You Euthanize a Sick Dog?

Tuesday Top Ten: What to Do When Your Dog Gets Sick at the Pet Sitter’s

While we were away last weekend, Maggie had another seizure.  Scared our young pet sitter out of her mind.  We were able to calm her down by phone, and Maggie fortunately made it through the weekend without further incident.  However, it brought up the question of what to do when you travel to make sure your pet’s care is handled the way you would want.
