If people outside of northeastern Ohio have heard of Massillon at all, it’s usually because of their high school football team, the Massillon Tigers. Turns out this town that is just down the road from me is also notable for something else: the only Dogo Argentino in the US certified as a police K-9.

Happy Birthday to a K-9 Legend

JokerFrom the Brimfield PD Facebook page (if you haven’t “liked” it yet, you should!): About eight years ago, our department was very fortunate to welcome K-9 Joker into our ranks. Today is K-9 Joker’s birthday! He is now retired and at home, likely barking at squirrels and joggers.

K-9 Joker served the Brimfield Police Department for seven years, assigned to (now) Captain Adkins. Joker had an awesome nose and excelled at finding drugs, tracking and evidence recovery. He once tracked a drunken driver over pavement, through woods and swamp and directly to the back door of the fella’s house. He is a hoot to be around and had one heck of a work ethic. He was responsible for removing countless drugs from the streets.

He is now enjoying retirement and still lives with his police partner, Captain Adkins. Captain Adkins is not retired, much to his regret when subjected to my daily shenanigans.

Happy Birthday to K-9 Joker. We miss working with you. I truly miss the slobber all over my desk, phone, computer, pants, boots and chairs…..

Although my stash of stuffed animals is much safer now…..Chief Oliver.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Show Me the Money!

Who knew? Dogs can apparently tell the amount of money you’re carrying just by sniffing your bags. A recent traveler returning to the US from Qatar was carrying almost $25,000 in his suitcase when he landed at Dulles, but he only declared $8,000 of it. That’s a no-no according to customs officials. You can bring in unlimited amounts of cash, but you have to declare it if it’s over $10,000.

New York City K9 Team Gets Technology Boost

Police dogs in New York now have a new gadget in their crime-fighting arsenal: Infrared cameras.

A camera is strapped to the dog’s back with real-time images transmitted to the handler’s wrist-mounted display, allowing the officer to see into dark spaces he wouldn’t be able to get into himself.

A recent training mission had two-year-old Apache, a German Shepherd, tracking a “suspect” (actually a human officer) in the underground subway system.  Apache and his fellow trainees are the first group of NYPD dogs to get infrared cameras, which are the same kind the Navy Seals used in the raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound last year.

Other new high-tech equipment includes a canine GPS tracking system to help follow dogs on a scent trail, dog collars that emit light, and two custom-built mobile air-conditioned kennel trucks with food storage and rest areas so K9 officers can take a break, have a meal, or escape the summer heat.  The trucks can store up to a month of food so they could be used in disaster zones if needed.

One Last Ride for K-9 Officer Kora

From the Hartford Courant via Life With Dogs: Kora, an 11-year old German Shepherd, retired in August after nine years of service with the West Hartford K-9 Unit. Everyone expected her to live out her retirement with her handler, Officer Eric Rocheleau. However, he noticed that she was beginning to seem sluggish, so he took her to the vet last Monday.
