Stamps for Shelter Pets

Did you know you can now help out shelter pets simply by mailing a letter?  Maybe it’s time to take a break from e-mail and paying the bills electronically so you can use some stamps now available from the US Postal Service.  According to their press release:

The U.S. Postal Service continued a 50-year tradition today with the dedication of its latest social awareness stamp — Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet. The 44-cent stamps, on sale nationwide, feature photographs of five cats and five dogs from animal shelters and rescue groups.

“As a pet owner myself, I find this campaign enormously gratifying. Because of these stamps and the Stamps to the Rescue campaign, more people will learn about the plight of shelter animals,” said Joseph Corbett, Postal Service Chief Financial Officer. “More people, we believe, will adopt shelter animals, fewer people will abandon their pets, more people will spay or neuter their animals, and fewer animals will suffer.”

HALO, the holistic pet company partly owned by Ellen DeGenerous, has pledged to buy food for 1 million shelter animals during the stamps’ roll-out campaign.

Drakko from The Pet Patrol

I was at the hospital last night visiting a friend and had the pleasure of running into Drakko. He is a Pet Therapy specialist serving at Mercy Hospital through a partnership with The Delta Society.

This beautiful Golden Doodle wears boots.  I asked if he had trouble on the slick hospital floors, and his handler Teresa said that he was fine on the floors, but his feet get so muddy, she puts boots on him when it rains so he doesn’t track dirt all over the hospital.

Thanks for all you do, Drakko and Teresa!

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Shelter Sunday: Deaf Dane Rescue / Oakridge, Oregon

Em is a recent arrival at Deaf Dane Rescue in Oakridge, Oregon. She is 9 months old and very sweet, but she is rather timid. She is a wiggly girl, always wagging her tail so hard her whole body is wiggling. She has some potty training issues which we will be working on. She has peed in the house a few times. She has a hard time holding it all night sometimes. She is a sweet baby and wants so much to please. All she needs is some time, and a loving home.

Saturday Survey: What’s a vicious dog?

We recently changed carriers for our home insurance, and since we have so many dogs, we  had to fill out several questionnaires so the insurance company could figure out what type of risk they were taking on.

In order to answer some of the questions, I had to have the agent send us a copy of the dog laws in Ohio, which set forth definitions for “dangerous dogs” and “vicious dogs”.

Legalities aside, what do you think – what constitutes a vicious dog?

Will your dog bite the mailman?

You’ve heard the old joke, “Does your dog bite?”  and the answer is, of course, “Does he have teeth?”  The truth is that any dog, given the proper set of circumstances, can and will bite.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) report that small children, the elderly, and Postal Service carriers, in that order are the most frequent victims of dog bites.

May 18 – 24 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and the United States Postal Service wants you to know the following.
